Bikes we most want to ride in 2017

Homologation specials, carbon treats, retro, adventure, LAMS, supermoto -- there's a lot of fun on the horizon!

1. BMW HP4 Race. Dripping with high-end gear, this is as exotic as Beemers get.
2. Ducati 1299 Superleggera. The cream of the Ducati crop promises a Latin love affair on two wheels.
3. BMW R nineT Racer. We love the R nineT concept and the Racer, with half fairing and clip-ons, really pushes our buttons.
4. Honda RC213V-S. It's worth a fortune, but the pinnacle of Honda sporting prowess has to be on the wish list.
5. Ducati Multistrada 950. An entry-level Multi with all the versatility but a lower price tag sounds like a good thing to us.

Unfortunately, the bikes I most want to ride next year I won’t be able to and, most probably, neither will you. Because this year’s international show season saw a shift towards high-end uber-expensive superbike exotica: Ducati’s $100K 1299 Panigale Superleggera, for example. Or Norton’s carbon 1200cc V4 SS, and let’s not even talk about the long list of homologation specials. But, of the bikes I probably will have the opportunity to ride, Husqvarna’s new range of roadies is calling my name, not least the 1301. BMW’s new R nineT Racer looks like a hoot, the variable valve timing on the new Suzuki GSX-R1000 will be interesting and Ducati’s new 950 Multistrada should be far better than its specs suggest.

Anything with KTM on it seems to be a good start, except maybe the LAMS thingos – I’m thankfully beyond restricted bikes (by, ahem, 25 years or so). The 2017 Enduro range is sublime, and if the 1190R Super Duke is as big an improvement on the 2016 bikes as it promises to be, then it’s got my name all over it! Then there’s the GT – fast, light, comfortable, a worthy electronics package - Team Orange is going off! Mind you, so is Team Blue (Yamaha) and that MT-10 Special Edition looks, well, special. For me though, the Orange range has everything I need and, most importantly, lust after, so anything it produces next year will need my butt on it...

1. Kawasaki with artificial intelligence. This one's probably a bridge too far for 2017, but a "personality to grow with the rider" can't all be that bad – as long as you are an upstanding citizen. The technology is probably not a good fit for Ivan Milat or Bradley Murdoch...

2. Aprilia Dorsoduro 900. The Dorsoduro name disappeared in Australia two years ago when the 750cc model was ditched, and two years before that the thrill-a-minute 1200cc version of the supermoto family went by the wayside. Now the Dorsoduro is back with the old 750cc mill stroked, and Aprilia says that anything not to do with performance has been ditched.
3. Kawasaki Versys X-300. Using the engine from Australia's most popular bike over the last three to four years, the Ninja 300, the Versys-X 300 looks trick, and should be a hoot off-road with its 19/17-inch wheel combo.
4. Ducati Multistrada 950. I'll be a copy cat and echo the thoughts of Rod and Kellie.
5. KTM 1290 Super Duke R: This machine takes enthusiasm to a new level, and with the electronic and engine updates it will be better than ever. Want a bike that can morph from genial pussy cat to the ultimate street fighter in the blink of an eye? Look no further...
