Africa is rapidly emerging as the next global motorcycle hotspot, with a new report projecting the continent's bike market to exceed $US9 billion in 2021, up from its current level of $US4 billion.
Produced by TechSci Research, the report – titled Africa Two-Wheeler Market By Vehicle Type, By Country, Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2011 to 2021, indicates the strong rate of urbanisation across the African continent is provoking strong demand for powered two-wheelers.
Approximately 45 per cent of the African population currently resides in urban areas, but that figure is projected to grow strongly in coming years.
That trend is also seeing demand surge for motorcycle taxis, or boda bodas as they're known, which is also pushing motorcycle sales.
Easily accessible motorcycle finance packages and an influx of cheap imports from Indian motorcycle manufacturers is also spurring demand.
It's not all good news for Africa, however – with the rising tide of motorcycles comes ever-higher accident and road fatality rates, and an increasing number of motorcycles that are being used for crime.
The largest motorcycle markets in Africa are South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania, followed by Kenya, Algeria, Uganda, Egypt, Morocco, Angola and Ethiopia.
