Bike sales strengthen

The half-year sales stats are in, with the Australian motorcycle and ATV market registering some promising growth
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has just released motorcycle and ATV sales data for June 2016, with the half-year tally equating with growth of 3.5 per cent over the previous corresponding period.
The results build on the small gain registered in the first quarter of 2016, of 1.6 per cent.

The ATV and SSV market was up by 3.6 per cent, with 11,164 examples sold in the first six months of 2016, while sales of off-road bikes were also up (by 4.3 per cent to 16,492), as were those of road bikes (up 4.4 per cent to 22,921).

The only red ink across the industry concerned the scooter segment, which recorded a drop of 11 per cent, down to 2205 units from 2478 in the same period last year.

SUMMARY REPORT

Honda was the leading volume manufacturer with 23.2 per cent of the market, followed by Yamaha (20.1), Kawasaki (10.1), Suzuki (8.9), Harley-Davidson (8.9), KTM (6.5), Polaris (5.2), BMW (3.3), Triumph (2.9) and BRP (2.4). Suzuki just edged Harley-Davidson out of third position by 33 units!

Individually, the Yamaha WR450F is the biggest selling motorcycle in Australia outside the NBC110 (Honda's Australia Post contract) with 924 units retailed in 2016, ahead of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 (808), Honda CRF50F (777), Harley-Davidson Street 500 (744), Yamaha MT-07L (716), Yamaha YZF-R3 (695), Honda CRF230F (615), Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout (606) and Honda CRF110F (592). The WR450F is up by a whopping 76.3 per cent.

 — Motocross: Yamaha YZ450F
 — Fun: CRF50F
 — Farm: Suzuki Trojan
 — Trail: Honda CRF230F
