Desert racing jockey Ben Grabham. Just three months after suffering severe spinal injuries in a horror crash at the Condo 750 when hit a mob of kangaroos at 160km/h, the Bathurst native was back on a KTM, taking his first tentative steps back into riding. He still hasn’t raced again, but he will be soon – in that South American-based stroll they call the Dakar! All the action starts on January 5, 2013, and we’ll be keeping a keen eye on Grabham’s progress. The man is a juggernaut.

Casey Stoner copped a bit of criticism from some quarters for what his detractors saw as ‘throwing in the towel’ while still in his prime, but I’m giving him top honours for actually following his heart and exiting MotoGP despite the massive weight of expectation on his shoulders. He’d reached the very top on two occasions already and he’s now got a family to think about too – good on him for walking away, I say, and stuff the money, the sponsors, and the time in the spotlight. Also, a massive ‘thumbs up’ for Chris Holder, Australia’s newly crowned world speedway champ, and for Laia Sanz, the woman who took out two world titles (women’s enduro and women’s trials) this year – that’s one talented rider!

“He’ll not be able to ride like that here.”
“His aggression won’t translate onto the big bikes.”
“He’ll upset a few people.”
Bollocks, he’ll upset the lot of you MotoGP stars. The freak show Thunderbird-puppet that is Marc Marquez is coming to town and has been warned by the adults to play nice. Fat chance. He’ll elbow, bash and crash his way to the front of the MotoGP spectacle and a new legend will be born. Get those prima-donna feathers ready to be ruffled and plucked.
