The latest Road Deaths Australia report from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics states that 200 motorcycle fatalities were recorded on Australian roads in the 12 months to the end of November, 2013.
The figure represents a fall of 11.5 percent over the corresponding 2012 figure (226 deaths) and an average drop of three percent over the preceding five years.
The figures look even better against the backdrop of soaring motorcycle registrations in Australia in recent years (up by more than 30 percent over the past five years). However, riders are still disproportionately represented in death and accident statistics. Of the total of 1196 road fatalities recorded in Australia in the 12 months to the end of November, 592 were listed as ‘driver’ fatalities, 204 as ‘passenger’ fatalities, 200 as ‘motorcycle’ fatalities, 147 as ‘pedestrian’ fatalities, and 43 as ‘cyclist’ fatalities.
The Australia Bureau of Statistics recently estimated the national motorcycle fleet to comprise roughly 750,000 bikes, while there are around 13,000,000 cars on our roads.
