Bike company of the year

One company stands out from the pack in 2013 with its superb blend of off-road and road tackle -- and also for a few shrewd decisions made at the board level

KTM is the one. Big, small, commuter, adventure and play (aka Freeride 250), the Austrian company has produced some mighty pickings in 2013, and on a techno scale the gains have been massive. Its anti-lock braking and traction control on the 1190 Adventures is equal - if not better -- than BMW's. Quite the endorsement.
Honourable mention: Yamaha

KTM – for constantly innovating and producing superb models, when most other companies are still reeling from the GFC.

KTM – buying, selling, merging, reconverging. I reckon weekly board meetings in the Austrian’s nerve centre are fairly bizarre. “We’ve bought who? And you want to turn it into what?” While the Japanese are only now starting to come out of their post-GFC slumber, KTM has been aggressively moving forward with buying Husqvana and then merging it with Husaberg. The rebranding press release kinda made sense. But only kinda. Will it be too much too soon for the Orangemen, or have they a plan that’ll see more road bikes alongside the dominant off-roaders, while they drop the competition like a hitman on a promise.
