Fancy something a little bit retro, or perhaps even vintage? Then Ballarat Festival of Motoring, due to be held in the Victorian city from Saturday, August 25 to Sunday, September 2, is sure to pique your interest.
The week-long event will recall a time when four major race meetings -- and the site of Formula 1 racing during the 1950s and '60s -- made Ballarat a focal point for regional and international rev-heads alike.
While predominantly a car event, Ballarat Festival of Motoring promoter Terie Koutrouzas says the event offers something for everyone, with static and racing car displays, motorcycles and even children’s toys from the era set to attract a diverse audience.
"Ballarat presents a nostalgic event that celebrates the region’s rich motoring heritage," she said. "Including a display of historic racing cars at the Ballarat Mining Exchange, a reunion dinner attended by many of the drivers and officials involved in the 1947-1961 aerodrome racing circuit, the Show and Shine at the Ballarat Airport and sprint races at the Ballarat aerodrome, visitors can catch a glimpse of days gone by with cars from a golden era of racing," she added.
Highlights of the event include a four-day motor show from Wednesday, August 29 until Saturday, September 1 to be held at the Ballarat Mining Exchange. The show will play host to a significant range of historic and rare racing cars, sports cars and motorcycles -- as well as a memorabilia display of over 400 items including motoring books, model steam engines, miniature internal combustion engines and tether cars.
A competitive Show and Shine at Ballarat Airport on Saturday, September 1 will showcase the best vintage vehicles in the categories of pre-WW2 racing cars, sports cars and motorcycles and post-WW2 racing cars, sports cars, touring cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Individual trophies will be awarded to each of the Class winners as well as an overall outright winning car, motorcycle and commercial vehicle.
By popular request, the 2012 Ballarat Festival of Motoring will be hosting more speed events on the old airstrip track including circuit parade laps, standing-start timed super sprints as well as the CAMS-certified historic racing, followed by an official participant recognition and award ceremony.
