Australian Supercross Championship returns for 2022

After a two-year hiatus, the Australian Supercross Championship is back with new locations and new initiatives

The Australia Supercross Championship is set to return at the end of 2022, with the five-round series scheduled to visit at least three states.

New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia have all been confirmed to host rounds, while the first round is listed as TBA. It is likely that this round will run in conjunction with a local leg of the newly-formed World Supercross Championship, possibly at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

Specfic details on the Australian series are yet to be revealed, but promoters AME Management have confirmed Fox Racing will return as the naming rights sponsors, as well as dates for four rounds.

Rounds 2 and 3 will be held in NSW on November 26 and December 3 respectivley, while WA will host Round 4 on January 14. A South Australian finale will be held on January 21.

The championship will be led by AME’s General Manger of Events and Commercial, Ben Williams, who has over 25 years experience in the motocross and supercross industry.

“We are excited to roll out a new direction for Australian Supercross after taking an opportunity to reset,” said Williams.

“The Australian Supercross Championship is one of the most credible, respected and hard fought on the planet. It’s important we re-establish the series post-COVID and give our riders the platform to catapult more Australian stars into the global spotlight.”

Williams also highlighted grassroots participation and engagement with a younger fanbase as key goals for the new series. Running the series over the Australian summer will also hopefully encourage fans to flock to the races.

The Australian Supercross Championship was last run in 2019, when the annual AUS-X Open acted as the finale at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

With AME offshoot SX Global securing the rights to the FIM World Supercross Championship, the AUS-X Open concept has been benched in favour of a round of the new global series. Adam Bailey told bikesales in March that an Australian leg will run alongside and Australian Supercross Championship round.

More information on the FIM World Supercross Championship is expected in the coming months.
