A decade after the last event, world motocross racing could be on its way back Down Under with reports out of Europe suggesting that Australia will host the opening round of the 2011 championship.
Dutch-based Aussie expatriate Geoff Meyer, who runs the website MX Large, has quoted the world motocross boss Giuseppe Luongo as saying that "we will start in Australia in the middle of May in 2011".
That equates to the weekend of May 14-15 on next year's calendar, and the venue is likely to be the Barrabool circuit near Geelong (Vic), which Motorcycling Australia (MA) purchased in 2009 after it was threatened with extinction.
The State Motorcycle Complex in Broadford (Vic) hosted the 2000 and 2001 rounds of the Motocross World Championship, but the massive cost of acquiring the rights and then running a successful event far outweighted the income generated.
Australia could be in for a smorgasbord of top-shelf off-road action in 2011, on the basis that MA has also submitted an application to host a round of the Moto Trials World Championship.
Australia has hosted world championship racing for all disciplines of motorcycle racing except moto trials, but at the moment road racing -- via the world superbike and MotoGP rounds at Phillip Island -- has the only ongoing presence Down Under.
MA has made no official comment on the world motocross stories swirling across on-line media outlets.
