Australia second in SWC qualifier
And will now move onto a ‘race-off' against Latvia, Great Britain and America to try and win a spot in the 2013 Speedway World Cup final on July 18Team Australia has finished second in its qualifying event for the 2013 Speedway World Cup, behind Poland and in front of Latvia and Russia.
The meeting, held in Czestochowa, Poland, saw Poland win in a canter with 48pts, which automatically qualifies them for a spot in the Prague-hosted final on July 20.
Australia, meanwhile, goes through to the race-off against Latvia, Great Britain and America on July 18, also in Prague, with the top team going through to the final. Denmark and the Czech Republic (as the host nation) are the other confirmed finalists at this stage.
World GP campaigner Darcy Ward was Australia’s top scorer in Czestochowa with 14 of Australia’s 34pt haul. Troy Batchelor was also strong with 12pts, while Jason Doyle (seven) and Davey Watt (one) didn’t make a huge impact. Australia was without world champion Chris Holder, who recently suffered multiple injuries in a UK domestic league match.
