Australia’s bid to win the 2012 Speedway World Cup just fell short in Sweden on July 14, with Denmark winning the trophy by just 3pts.
Denmark handed debuts to two riders -- 20-year-old Michael Jepsen Jensen and 17-year-old Mikkel B Jensen – in the final, but the gamble paid off as the pair linked up with veteran Nicki Pedersen and Niels-Kristian Iversen to get the job done over the Aussies.
“The Australians are definitely a good team – no doubt about it,” Pedersen admitted. “Darcy Ward is the biggest talent in the world – the biggest we have ever had.
“I don’t know how on earth we actually beat them. But I think the way we did it was team spirit, we were confident about it.”
Chris Holder was the lynchpin for Australia in the final, scoring 16pts, followed by team captain Jason Crump (10), Darcy Ward (seven) and Davey Watt (three).
Crump went into heat 20 with his side just 2pts behind the Danes. But both the triple world champion made a poor start and Iversen got the point he needed to seal gold for the Scandinavians.
Crump said: “It was tough racing and there was not so much you could do. The Danish team scored more than us and won. We tried our best all night, but it just didn’t go for us. There is nothing you can say apart from ‘well done’ to the Danes. We gave it everything we had.”
Emil Sayfutdinov spearheaded Russia's third place, with Sweden fourth.
