Australia second in Speedway World Cup qualifier

Poland goes straight through to final

Australia has come out second best in a tight battle with Poland in the Speedway World Cup qualifying meeting at Peterborough on July 13.

After leading for most of the first half, Australia fell behind Poland in heat 18, and wasn’t able to regain the ascendancy again as it eventually lost by 2pts (54 to 52).

Poland was assured of victory in the penultimate heat when Jaroslaw Hampel prevailed, with Australia’s Chris Holder second. That increased Poland’s lead to an unassailable 5pts.

In the final heat, Poland’s Tomasz Gollob was disqualified, with Australia’s Jason Crump winning the ‘dead’ rubber.

Australia will now go through to a race-off in Poland on July 16 against Sweden, Denmark and Great Britain. The top two teams in the race-off will join Russia and Poland in the final, again in Poland, on July 18.

Crump was the top score for Australia on 14pts, from Leigh Adams (11), Chris Holder (10), Davey Watt (10) and Ryan Sullivan (7). Hampel was the anchor for Poland with 14pts.

Great Britain was third overall on 34pts, from Slovenia (13).
