Australia has named a stellar 10-man squad for the 2014 FIM Speedway World Cup (SWC), as the team from Down Under sets out to win its first event since way back in 2002.
Speedway Grand Prix stars Chris Holder, Darcy Ward and Danish SGP runner-up Troy Batchelor are all likely to face Great Britain, America and a qualifier when the SWC begins at King’s Lynn in England on Saturday, July 26.
The squad is completed by Aussie title runner-up Jason Doyle, Davey Watt, Cameron Woodward, Josh Grajczonek and Dakota North, while newcomers Rohan Tungate and Max Fricke complete the list.
The Aussies will fancy their chances of bagging first place in King’s Lynn and qualify directly for the final at Bydgoszcz in Poland on August 2.
“Expectations are high, although we tread with caution as we haven’t lifted the Ove Fundin Trophy since the class of 2002,” said Aussie team manager Mark Lemon. “We need to win at Kings Lynn to get the direct route to the final and avoid the cut throat race-off We have the fire power to win, but can’t afford any complacency. Team competition is always fierce when national pride is at stake.”
Since the 2002 success, Australia has finished on the dais six times, with Denmark and Poland the dominant nations. Poland defeated Denmark and Australia in the 2013 final.
