Aussies out of ISDE contention
Another two DNFs from the Senior Trophy team has shut the door on a possible podium finish, but it continues to be an amazing event for Matthew PhillipsDay four of this year’s International Six-Day Enduro in Finland was one to forget for Australia, with the World Trophy team falling out of podium contention.
With veteran Kirk Hutton (Yamaha) already out of action after a day two crash, things went from bad to worse as Daniel Milner (Yamaha) was forced out of action with ongoing mechanical issues and Glenn Kearney (Husqvarna) was hit with a 52-minute time penalty.
The horror day saw the Aussies drop from seventh to 15th in the Senior Trophy rankings, with only Matthew Phillips (Yamaha), Toby Price (KTM) and Geoff Braico (Husaberg) now left to continue the campaign into day five.
Phillips has been a stunning revelation in his ISDE debut, and remains second in the E2 class, and fifth overall behind the experienced quartet of Eero Remes (KTM), Juha Salminen (Husqvarna), Marko Tarkkala (Husaberg) and Kurt Casselli (KTM).
The last Australian team member to finish on an ISDE podium – either outright or in a class – was Stefan Merriman way back in 2004 in Brazil.
Price is seventh in the E2 class and Braico 11th in E3.
While the World Trophy team had a day to forget, it was left to the Junior Trophy riders to provide some positive news and they delivered in the form of young gun Mitcham Harper. The teenager recorded his best finish of the ISDE, coming in 17th in the E2 class and moving up to 16th overall.
The team is now fifth overall, 42 minutes behind the leader, France.
