After its winter recess, speedway action returns to the UK this weekend, with a number of Australian riders mixing their British commitments with racing in the Polish, Swedish and German leagues.
Thirty-five Australians are set to compete in the UK this year, with nine of them in the top-tier Elite League – Rory Schlein, Justin Sedgmen, Adam Shields, Darcy Ward, Cameron Woodward, Cory Gathercole, Chris Holder, Sam Master and Josh Grajzonek.
However, Ward’s season has been put on hold for 4-5 weeks after the two-time world under 21 champion broke his wrist and shoulder in a motocross crash this week.
A couple of familiar Aussie names are missing from the UK roster in 2011 – Leigh Adams and Jason Crump. Adams has retired from all speedway competition after a stellar two-decade career, while Crump is no longer competing in the UK, preferring to concentrate on the Polish and Swedish leagues and other one-off events.
Crump will also compete in the 2011 world speedway title alongside Holder, with the title set to commence in Poland on April 30.
