Queensland’s Jett Lawrence took the overall win at the Unadilla National on Sunday to sit second in the AMA Pro Motocross 250cc championship with four races remaining.
Lawrence carded a 2-1 result on his factory Honda, and now sits just four points behind Yamaha’s Justin Cooper in the title race. The Australian rider’s older brother Hunter is third in the standings, but is 67 points behind Cooper after a sixth place finish.
The only Australian to win an AMA Pro Motocross title was Chad Reed in 2009, who won the 450cc title while racing for the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team.

Cooper drew first blood at Unadilla, taking the first moto in a spirited battle with Lawrence, who finished second ahead of Jeremy Martin (Yamaha) in third.
Lawrence started the second moto behind both Martin and Cooper, but he fought back, passing both throughout the race and breaking away for a comfortable win.
Hunter finished with a 5-11 result, but his relatively consistent results throughout the series have put him in the picture for a podium finish in the championship.
The Lawrence brothers have been a revelation in recent years, quickly rising to become two of the most popular riders in America. Older brother Hunter first caught the world’s attention in the MX2 World Championship in Europe, but since the family’s move to the USA, Jett has stepped out from his brother’s shadow to battle for championship glory.
Meanwhile, in the 450cc class, Honda’s Ken Roczen finished 1-1 to keep himself in the title race heading into the last four races. The German rider’s dominant performance saw him gain eight points on red plate-holder, Dylan Ferrandis (Yamaha), but there is still 39 points separating the pair.
The next round of the AMA Pro Motocross series take placed this week at Budds Creek in Maryland.
