Aussie motorcycle market sizzles

A stunning start to the year with the market 25 percent up, thanks to some old favourites surging and emerging brands continuing to impress

Led by a Japanese heavyweight Honda, the Australian motorcycle market – ATV, off-road, road and scooter -- has kicked off 2012 all guns blazing, with 8180 units retailed in January –smashing the corresponding 2011 figure by 25.4 percent.

Al the market segments were well up, with ATV in the black by 33.7 percent, off-road by 21.8, road by 27.8 and scooter by 14.1.

Honda has begun the year off the long run, with its sales increasing by 112 percent – but the news wasn’t so rosy for its Japanese opposition. Yamaha and Suzuki both lost ground, while Kawasaki was only marginally up.

As for the others, the Americans (Polaris, Victory and Harley-Davidson) all showed double digit growth, as did Triumph, Ducati, KTM and Kymco, while some emerging brands (CF Moto and Daelim) went up by three figures – albeit from low bases. Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi all rose by over 100 percent, too.

Honda leads on total sales, ahead of Yamaha, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, KTM, Polaris, Triumph, Husqvarna, Kymco and Piaggio.
