Aussie market down six per cent

Sluggish retail sales across all segments other than scooter

Australia’s motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle market has fallen 6.2 per cent at the end of the third quarter of 2018.

National sales data by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) recorded overall sales of 68,494, compared with 73,058 during the same period in 2017.

In percentage terms, the ATV sector suffered the biggest loss – 11.2 – while road and off-road contracted 7.5 and 3.3 respectively.

Scooter continued to buck the current trend, up 11.8 per cent compared to 2017.

Road bikes comprise 40 per cent of the total market, followed by off-road (34), ATV/SSV (21.5) and scooter (4.5).

Honda's No. 1

Among the individual brands, Honda came in at number one overall with 16,051 sales (23.4 per cent market share), followed by Yamaha (14,393 sales), Kawasaki (6857), KTM (5792), Suzuki (5278), Harley-Davidson (5196), Polaris (4143), BMW (2061), BRP (1919), Husqvarna (1741) and Triumph (1679).

KTM was the only manufacturer among that top 10 whose sales have improved over the last 12 months, while others in the black are Indian and Vespa.

A number of marques – as non-FCAI members – aren't included in the official sales figures, such as Gas Gas, Benelli, MV Agusta, Kymco, Sherco and CFMoto.
