
A total of 75,847 motorcycles, scooters and ATVs have been sold in Australia in the first nine months of 2015, down 2.5 percent on the same period in 2014.
Road-based motorcycles continue to be a popular choice in 2015, with Australians purchasing 10,749 of them in the third quarter of 2015 — bringing the year-to-date total to 32,437. In that category, Harley-Davidson's total of 6807 units (or 21 percent of total road motor cycles sold) is the largest figure for any manufacturer across the four separate classifications: ATV, off-road, road and scooter.
Like road, ATV sales are also up YTD by 3.9 percent, while off-road and scooter sales are down by 6.3 and 23.1 percent respectively.
Scooter sales have more than halved in the last three years, with the corresponding figure in 2012 7887 units compared to 3987 this year.
Among the marques to increase sales in 2015 are Arctic Cat, BMW Motorrad, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Yamaha, Indian and Suzuki, while Aprilia, Honda, Husqvarna, Hyosung, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, Moto Guzzi, SYM, Vespa and Victory have all contracted.
Overall, Honda was the leading volume manufacturer between January 1 and September 30, 2015, with 22.5 per cent of motorcycle, ATV and scooter sales. Honda was followed by Yamaha with 20 percent, Kawasaki (9.8), Suzuki (9.3), Harley-Davidson (9.0), KTM (6.4), Polaris (4.8), BMW Motorrad (3.4), Triumph (2.9) and Ducati (2.1).
