If you were driving on the outskirts of Melbourne last weekend and saw what looked like a person back flipping a Harley-Davidson XR1200, you are not a certified nutter - it happened.
Actually, the real nutter is Australasian freestyle motocross champion Kain Saul, who performed the back flip just to add to his dossier of tricks.
Saul made the decision to attempt the stunt only 24 hours prior to boarding the XR1200 Sportster machine for the very first time. He made the trip from his home on the Gold Coast to Tooradin to spend an afternoon jumping into a purpose-built foam pit. Immediately he knew the jump was within his grasp and the very next day made history.
"I didn't really tell too many people about this jump. I wanted to keep it on the low-down just in case things didn't feel right, or I wasn't feeling comfortable," Saul said. "I was actually surprised at how comfortable I felt on the bike right away. As soon as I did my first flip into the foam pit, I knew I could get it done. I was pretty nervous, but that feeling I got when I landed was just amazing; that feeling is why I love riding dirtbikes so much!
The modified Harley Davidson XR1200 is the brainchild of Mildura-based Harley-Davidson dealer principal Gavin Walker, who spent close to two years planning for this moment.
Stay tuned for more shenanigans in the New Year, when cult hero Seth Enslow will attempt a world record long distance jump on a Harley-Davidson.
But in the meantime here's Saul's little effort:
