Yamaha's Wayne Maxwell won round two of the Australasian Superbike Championship at Mallala (SA) on May 17, giving the all-new YZF-R1M its first major round win on local soil.
Maxwell, the defending ASC champion, went 1-4-2 across the three races to bank 65pts, finishing ahead of Honda pair Jamie Stauffer (5-3-1, 61pts) and championship leader Troy Herfoss (4-1-4, 61pts).
MALLALA ASC RESULTS
“It was a good weekend and I’m stoked with the results we achieved," said Maxwell. "With each ride of the new bike we gain a little bit of knowledge and comfort and I still feel there is room for improvement. The team has worked hard to get it to this level and to think this is only its second event and we have already had some success."
Herfoss increased his championship lead to 6pts (109 to 103) at Mallala, with Maxwell taking over second spot from Aiden Wagner — the young gun who deputised for Stauffer at the season opener choosing to continue his career in world supersport for Kawasaki rather than continue with Honda locally.
Yamaha's Glenn Allerton is third on 86pts from his teammate Cru Halliday (82pts), followed by privateer Mike Jones (Kawasaki, 80pts). Allerton and Jones were fourth and fifth overall at Mallala.
Michael Blair (Yamaha) was the victor in supersport.
Round three of the Australasian Superbike Championship returns to Sydney Motorsport Park on June 28. For more information visit www.fxsuperbikes.com.au.
