Ariel to return?

British firm looks at two-wheeled options

The Ariel Motor company, based in Somerset in the UK, is floating the idea of getting into motorcycles, having met with some success and rave reviews for its lightweight Atom sports car.

Its Atom is a bare-bones open-wheeler punted by a 245 horse 2-litre Honda VTEC engine and running chain drive.

By all reports it has stunning acceleration and has won a lot of praise from the motoring media.

Now the company wants to return to the roots of its name, by constructing a motorcycle.

It has put three ideas into the public arena - varying from the conventional to the borderline loopy.

Idea one is for a Fireblade-powered machine running Ariel's own chassis and bodywork (pictured).

The second is for an electric-powered machine, while number three involves a supercharged single-cylinder bike.

We can only hope the last two ideas are a means of gaining some media coverage, rather than a serious reflection of the company's understanding of the motorcycle market.

Ariel is run by Simon Saunders, who lays claim to being a former designer for Porsche, Aston Martin and General Motors.
