Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200

Unveiled at an event in Milan, the 2011 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 sports an all-new big-bore engine

The first official image of the new Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 has hit the digital superhighway, a month or so after details of the new model came to light via an embarrassing leak on the Aprilia dealer portal.

It's a little bit chunkier and a lot more powerful than its 750 sibling, but will the Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 capture the motorcycling community's imagination? Time will tell.

This new photo comes from an early unveiling of the new model at the Piaggio Group's HQ in Milan, ahead of its public debut at EICMA in November.

Along with the new photo comes a slew of juicy details on the Dorsoduro 1200's engine, including peak power and torque figures for the 1200cc 90-degree, liquid-cooled V-twin engine.

Developing 130hp (95kW) at 8700rpm and an impressive 115Nm of torque at 7200rpm, the new big-bore streetfighter certainly won't be a shrinking violet when it comes to traffic light showdowns. It'll also benefit from a ride-by-wire throttle with three different engine maps, allowing riders to switch between full power and low power to suit changing conditions.

Optional features will include twin-channel ABS and also the Aprilia Traction Control (ATC) system borrowed from the Aprilia RSV4, both of which are switchable.

Aprilia has chosen a steel trellis frame to keep the bike's mechanical gizzards from spilling out, and propping up the front wheel is a fully adjustable 43mm upside-down Sachs forks, while the rear end gets a fully adjustable Sachs shock absorber.

Brembo stoppers take care of deceleration - four-piston front and single-piston calipers at the rear, clamping twin 320mm rotors fore and a single 240mm rotor aft.

Perhaps the only disappointing aspect of the new 223kg Dorsoduro 1200's specifications is the 15-litre fuel tank, which may limit the motorcycle's touring range depending on how it's ridden.

The 2011 Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 will be officially unveiled to the public at EICMA 2010 in Milan.
