Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that South Aussie expat Billy McConnell will compete as a wildcard in the world supersport (WSS) round at Phillip Island on February 23, he will now be joined by a compatriot – Ryan Taylor.
Taylor, 26, has been slogging it out for the past few years now in the Australian Supersport Championship. In 2013 he finished fourth overall, which included a third place at the opening round at Phillip Island held in conjunction with the world superbike round. Taylor also has two Victorian supersport titles under his belt. He is also no stranger to international racing, as he competed in the Superstock 600 European Championship in 2007 with the Lightspeed-Kawasaki team.
Taylor also dabbles in historic racing, and just last weekend was the winner of the Period 6 Formula 1300 class at the International Island Classic.
“I’m super excited to line up on the grid at the island at the end of February,” said Taylor.
“To be able to go and mix it up with the world’s best on a track I know so well is going to be the biggest buzz. I know it’s not going to be an easy task, but will give it a red hot go that’s for sure! Without all the great support from sponsors, this could not be possible. So I can’t thank them enough for this fantastic opportunity!”
Taylor will ride a Yamaha YZF-R6 under the Oz Wildcard Racing banner.
The opening round of the 2014 Superbike World Championship will be held from February 21-23 at the seaside circuit, Phillip Island. For more information, including ticketing, visit www.worldsbk.com.au.
