Andrew Johnson to make a comeback in Island Classic?

Another legend may be pulling on the leathers

January 16, 2009

Hard-charging former Australian road racing star Andrew Johnson could be making a comeback in this year's Island Classic historic meeting at Phillip Island from January 23-25.

Widely known under the "Ajay" sobriquet, Johnson won 16 major titles during a decorated road racing career, a majority of that time spent with Team Honda alongside Tasmanian Malcolm Campbell.

Johnson was also a teammate of arch-rival Rob Phillis at Milledge Yamaha in 1979 when they campaigned TZ grand prix machines.

Some of the Superbike and production racing battles between Johnson, Campbell and the Suzuki-mounted Phillis in the early 1980s were fierce - both on and off the track.

Johnson also won the 1980 Castrol 6 Hour alongside Wayne Gardner.

Sources have confirmed Ajay, who recently retired as the long-time manager of Honda's all-conquering junior motocross team, is due to test a Suzuki GSX1100 as this article is written, and if the outing is successful he could be lining up on the grid at Phillip Island in a week's time.

Campbell, Phillis and Gardner are all competing at the Island Classic, which is the pre-eminent historic meeting in Australia and attracts a number of international riders.
