Americans dominate Aussie SX

The 2013 Australian Supercross Championship was held as an undercard to the MotoGP round at Phillip Island, and it was an American whitewash of the major classes

For the second year in succession, the Australian Supercross Championship has thrilled race fans at the Phillip Island-hosted Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

On the purpose-built track at Lukey Heights (near turn nine of the grand prix circuit), round four spoils on October 19 went to Honda's Weston Peick, before his fellow American Josh Hill won the following day’s Open final.

Hill’s start to finish victory saw him defeat Matt Moss (Suzuki), Sam Martin (Suzuki) and Dan McCoy (KTM), while Aussie expatriate Brett Metcalfe (Kawasaki) – making his first racing visit to Australia since 2005 -- crashed on the opening lap and was forced to the sidelines.

The night before, Pieck won easily ahead of Hill, Metcalfe, Jake Moss (Suzuki) and Jay Marmont (Kawasaki), while Matt Moss and McCoy were caught out in a pile-up seconds after the race began.

Hill now takes a five-point lead over Matt Moss into the final round of the championship at Toowoomba (Qld) on Saturday, November 16, with Jakes Moss sitting a further two points in arrears.

“I am feeling great. It was definitely a pretty good weekend,” Hill said. “I came into this event 10 points down and now I am leaving five points ahead.

“We turned things around in Mt Gambier and I certainly haven’t slacked off, I have been preparing really hard for this round. I really wanted to get out and dominate this weekend.

“I have to go back to the states for some testing but I can’t wait to get back and I think it will be a good battle for the title in Toowoomba.”

Meanwhile, Honda’s Gavin Faith won back-to-back Lites finals and now leads the championship by five points over Yamaha’s Luke Styke, while Ryan Marmont (Suzuki) also remains in the hunt.

In the Women’s Australian Supercross Championship, Kawasaki rider Meghan Rutledge dominated proceedings ahead of American Jessica Patterson (Yamaha) and Japan’s Sakaya Kaneshiro (Honda).
