American Ion

University student designs and constructs 130km/h electric bike

US design student Tom Miceli has, like many before him, developed his own electric motorcycle -- but this one seems to be several steps more advanced than most.

An alumni of Apalachian State University, he says the machine, called the Ion, uses an 84-volt lithium-ion battery that requires a six-hour charging time.

The juice is enough to punt the 48hp (34kW) three-phase motor to a claimed 130km/h, with a max range of 100km -- presumably not at top speed. Torque is a rollicking 142Nm.

Most impressively, Miceli says he completed the project in just one semester.
