Anchored by brilliant duo James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto, America has won the 62nd edition of the Motocross of Nations at Donington Park in England.
The pair both one a race each in last weekend’s event, and received superb back-up from Tim Ferry as America scored the honours from France, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy and Australia in front of 6000 spectators. It was America’s 19th win in the iconic team event.
The Australian trio of Chad Reed, Michael Byrne and Brett Metcalfe was a little off its game at Donington Park. Reed, in his first ride for Suzuki after switching from Yamaha, started race one in 22nd and rallied to finish 12th. He was then eighth in race two.
Reed’s disappointment was palpable: "It was a rough day and I'm a little bit embarrassed by my performance really. I didn't feel good all weekend and I just struggled with the track. The Australian team needed a leader today and I wasn't there - I'm very disappointed with myself.
"My bike was awesome though and it's only a shame that I wasn't able to twist the throttle and steer it in the right direction - I was a little off today. I'm really looking forward to getting back to Supercross (Ed: which starts in Perth this Saturday night) so I can get my groove on."
Meanwhile, Byrne suffered with a lack of set-up time and finished with an 8-36 scorecard, and Metcalfe was fourth overall in the MX2 class after his 17-10 results.
The 2009 event will be held in Italy.
