Australia’s Chad Reed broke his scapula, collarbone and T1 vertebra in a huge last-lap crash at round six of the 2014 AMA Supercross Championship in San Diego on Saturday, February 8.
Kawasaki-mounted Reed clipped the tail of Ken Roczen’s KTM, which sent the Aussie spearing off – but he still recovered to finish in 12th position.
Reed has declared he’ll be back riding at round seven in Seattle on February 15.
The round six winner was James Stewart (Suzuki) for the first time in 2014 from championship leader Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki), Roczen (KTM), Ryan Dungey (KTM) and Weston Pieck (Suzuki). Australia’s Matt Moss (Suzuki) was 22nd.
Villopoto has skipped away to a nine-point lead (126 to 117) over Roczen, followed by Reed (111), Stewart (105) and Yamaha’s Justin Brayton (98).
In the 250cc class, Australian rookie Dean Ferris (KTM) continued his run of consistently picking up points with a 10th place finish.
Ferris had a hard crash in the final practice session and injured his thumb. Riding in the first 250SX heat, he was third at the gate drop but got pushed back in the second corner and dropped to eighth place. He managed to move up two positions to qualify for the main event.
Ferris got a mid-pack start in the main event but his thumb injury was a handicap, he said. “It hurt pretty badly after my practice crash, but I knew this was the last race before the break so I wanted to try and get some points.”
The Australian rider has time to recover and return fit for the next East Coast round on April 12.
