Suzuki rider Davi Millsaps has extended his 2013 AMA supercross title lead to 14pts after finishing second at round five in Anaheim on February 2 – his second such result in consecutive weeks.
KTM’s Ryan Dungey was the victor in the latest round, with Justin Barcia (Honda) third ahead of James Stewart (Suzuki) and Australia’s Chad Reed (Honda).
Reed was involved in an opening lap fracas, and he then had to charge through the pack from 19th position. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Reed, who felt he had the package to challenge for victory.
“I feel like we now have all the pieces of the puzzle and it was the first time this year I felt like I could win,” he said. “Bring on San Diego, as I know we are heading in the right direction and I really want to put it all together for a good result.”
Reed is now on 81pts, behind Millsaps (107), Dungey (93), Trey Canard (Honda, 92) and Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki, 90).
Reed’s countryman Dan McCoy) is yet to qualify for a final, and he has one more try before packing up and heading home to Australia.
In the 250cc class, German Ken Roczen (KTM) is in charge, with a 20pt lead in the title race.
Australian Josh Cachia (KTM) finished a season-best 14th at Anaheim, with Kade Mosig (16th). The pair also qualified for the final the week before in Oakland.
