AMA SX: Canard scores breakthrough win

Chad Reed the leading Aussie in sixth, after being caught out in a turn one melee which saw him drop back to the rear of the pack

Honda rider Trey Canard has captured his first career victory in the open class of AMA Supercross, holding off defending champion Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) in Houston on February 12.

A huge crowd of 45,859 fans filled Reliant Stadium for round six, and they saw a huge melee at turn one in the 20-lap final, which included Australia’s Chad Reed (Honda) and championship leader James Stewart (Yamaha).

Through the bedlam, Honda’s Kevin Windham took centre stage and led until lap 10 before crashing and handing the lead to Canard.

Dungey then closed in and actually took over the top spot for a short time before Canard fought back to claim the victory.

“I don’t know what to say,” said Canard. “It was an awesome race. I just tried to hang in there, because it was a tricky track. I made a mistake and (Ryan) Dungey gained a lot of time on me and from there I was just riding defensive. We had a bit of a rough week this week, but this makes it all better.”

Completing the podium was Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, who overcame a bad start of his own after crossing the line in 12th on the first lap. Stewart was a lowly 18th.

By virtue of his podium finish, Villopoto also took over the championship lead on 132pts, ahead of Stewart (123), Canard (112), Reed (105) and Dungey (101).

South Aussie Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki) is seventh on 80pts after finishing eighth in Houston.

Round seven is in San Diego on February 19.
