The 2012 Australian Superbike Championship grid looks set to have a similar look and feel to 2011, with news that three of its top practitioners have re-committed to the same teams for another season -- Glenn Allerton at Procon BMW and Stauffer and Wayne Maxwell at Honda.
Allerton (pictured) will set out to become the first back-to-back champion since Jamie Stauffer in 2006-2007. Allerton won his first Superbike title in 2008.
"The BMW S 1000 RR was a fantastic motorcycle to ride and winning the 2011 title in the RR's first complete ASBK season was a career highlight,” said Allerton. “I am excited that we will be testing the new 2012 RR very soon and head into the new season full of confidence.”
Honda also has an updated machine in the form of the CBR1000RR for 2012.
“I am really excited to be riding for Team Honda Racing in 2012 and to be starting the season on the new Honda CBR1000RR is fantastic,” said Stauffer. “The development during the 2011 season has brought some great results, but I’m really keen to start testing the new model and see what it brings to the race track for 2012.”
And Maxwell said: “Team Honda Racing is definitely going to be strong next season and to be riding on the new Honda CBR1000RR alongside Jamie will be awesome. We work really well together and the team is strong so after a good break over Christmas I know the New Year will be a really positive one for Team Honda Racing.
“I have never been more determined to claim the Superbike title and I know I will have everything I need in the 2012 package to do so. Hopefully, Jamie and I can make it first and second throughout 2012. I know which position I plan to be in, we will just have to see what unfolds.”
Meanwhile, Team Suzuki is yet to make a formal announcement on its structure for 2012, but it’s believed that Josh Waters, Troy Herfoss and Robbie Budgen will again spearhead the Superbike effort.
The 2012 Australian Superbike Championship commences at Phillip Island from February 24-26.
