Glenn Allerton’s relentless pursuit of a second Australian Superbike Championship continued at Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway last weekend, scoring maximum points on his BMW ahead of Honda’s Wayne Maxwell.
“This weekend has been an awesome one for the team and it’s great to come back to Perth and show the strengths of the BMW to such a big crowd,” said Allerton. “We knew that everyone would be searching for more grip after yesterday’s race so got together and made some changes to the bike to make it a bit better.
“Over race distance it came on strong again and was super quick. I can’t thank the team enough for putting everything they have behind me.”
After banking 50pts at Barbagallo Raceway, Allerton’s lead in the championship has increased to 58pts (188 to 130) over Suzuki’s Troy Herfoss, followed by Ben Attard (Aprilia, 129), Craig Coxhell (Honda, 123), Jamie Stauffer (Honda, 119) and Maxwell (101).
In the opening 15-lap race one on Saturday, Allerton scored his fifth race win of the season courtesy of a penultimate lap pass on leader and polesitter, Maxwell.
Maxwell looked set to deliver the Honda factory team its maiden win for 2011 but could do nothing to stop Allerton who was biding his time on the fast-finishing S 1000 RR.
Jamie Stauffer was third ahead of Suzuki’s Robbie Bugden and Herfoss.
In race two, Allerton not only completed a perfect weekend but also set a new lap record of 55.533 en route to victory ahead of Maxwell, Coxhell, Stauffer and Bugden.
In the Prostock category, Team Suzuki rider Brodie Waters celebrated his 19th birthday in the best way possible by claiming pole position, overall victory and a new lap record aboard his GSX-R1000.
The next round of the Australian Superbike Championship will be held at Queensland Raceway from June 3-5, with a full complement of support classes including Supersport, Prostock, Superstock and Superlites.
