BMW rider Glenn Allerton has claimed the 2014 Australian Superbike Championship (ASC), with the second and final round of the embattled series held at Victoria’s Phillip Island on July 19-20.
It was Allerton’s third title after previous successes in 2008 and 2011 – but he barely raised a sweat this year in a field missing some of the stalwarts of previous campaigns such as Wayne Maxwell, Jamie Stauffer and Robbie Bugden. The trio has switched allegiances to the rival Australasian Superbike Championship in 2014, while Allerton has continued to contest both.
Despite the depleted field and the fact that the 2014 ASC was shortened to two rounds, Allerton’s still over the moon with the win.
"I'll take it, in five years’ time when my son's at school he'll be able say 'my dad's a three-time Australian superbike champion'. They won't go 'but he only raced two rounds so only two count!' -- nobody will care!"
Allerton now joins Shawn Giles (2000-2002) as the only other three-time ASC winner.
Race one at Phillip Island was a thrilling battle between Allerton, Jed Metcher (Honda) and Linden Magee (BMW), which went right to the wire. Allerton won it from Metcher by just 0.075 seconds, with Magee 1.260 seconds behind in third.
In race two, conditions were patchy, and Metcher was able to pull clear in the final laps to take the win from Allerton by just over three seconds, with Magee again in third.
Allerton also claimed the EVO unlimited championship, while Daniel Falzon (Yamaha) retained his supersport title despite losing out in the round to Aiden Wagner (Yamaha).
Western Australian racer Jessica Derrin had a weekend to remember claiming both the Women's and Production 250 titles, Mitch Kavney took out the Production 300 class, and Craig White went home as Formula 400 Australian champion.
Callum Barker was crowned 125GP Australian champion.
