Yamaha will debut its new semi-automatic transmission in the new MT-09, which is set to arrive in Australia this October.
The Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT will be the first bike to utilise the new Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission, which allows for either finger-operated shifting or fully automatic.
Yamaha joins KTM, Honda, and BMW in a recent wave of new automatic manual transmissions, which use electronics to control the clutch and gears.
Featuring the same three-cylinder 890cc CP3 engine at the standard MT-09, the new MT-09 Y-AMT will replace the traditional clutch lever and foot-operated gear shifter with handlebar-mounted buttons. The philosophy is that it allows riders to focus more on their riding position and weight distribution.
According to Yamaha, the new system is designed with performance in mind, rather than just comfort and convenience. With both automatic and manual modes, Yamaha believes the Y-AMT technology “enhances the torquey and agile nature of the MT-09, delivering a more engaging experience for riders”.
Elsewhere, the MT-09 Y-AMT retains the same features as the standard model, including fully adjustable suspension, Brembo brake components, a full suite of electronics and safety features, a full colour TFT display, and smartphone connectivity. The bike rolls on the latest iterant of Yamaha’s Deltabox frame.
Pricing is expected to be announced soon, but Yamaha Australia expects the bike to go on sale locally from October 2024.
