Anyone who is even half-interested in Japanese culture (and particularly anime) will be familiar with the 1988 movie Akira, arguably one of the most respected and important films of the genre.
The iconic vehicle from the film was a futuristic motorcycle ridden by Shotaro Kaneda, the film's main character, which has been brought to life in spectacular fashion by a bloke called Masashi Teshima.
The cyber bike appears to be based on a single-cylinder scooter platform, and took Teshima-san seven years to build. And as the photos show the replica is incredibly detailed and very faithful to the vehicle from the film.
The attention to detail is remarkable, right down to the decals.
All told, the cyber bike reportedly cost Teshima around ¥10 million ($118,000) to build, and though other replicas have been created in the past, this particular example is the only bike to be officially recognised by Akira's creator and director, Katsuhiro Otomo.
The bike's creator is currently riding the futuristic motorcycle around Japan to raise money for charity, and he plans to give the vehicle away to further raise funds.
The last stop of his trans-Japanese tour will be the sprawling city of Tokyo where the vehicle will be displayed at an exhibition celebrating Otomo's achievements in Japanese film.
