Australian racer Mark Aitchison has spilt with the Grillini Progea Superbike Team after just five of the 14 rounds comprising this year's Superbike World Championship season.
A short and succinct press release from Grillini Progea gave no reason for the divorce, with the team wishing Aitchison well for his future endeavours. "The team would like to thank Mark for the work carried out and wishes him all the best for his professional racing career," the release states.
Grillini Progea had struggled over the first five rounds of this season, with Aitchison scoring just three championship points aboard his BMW S 1000 RR thanks to a 16th place at Assen, Netherlands, and a 14th place at Donington, UK.
Twenty-nine-year-old American racer, Jake Holden, who has been campaigning an S 1000 RR in the AMA Superbike Championship, has been named as Aitchison's replacement for the upcoming round at Miller Motorsport Park in the USA, due to be held this coming weekend. It is understood the offer is purely for the one round, although a strong performance could well lead to bigger things.
There's no official statement from Aitchison at this stage, but it is rumoured the 28-year-old is considering a ride in the British Superbike Championship.
Aitchison shot to international prominence in 2007, when he finished fifth in the World Superstock Championship, his efforts also earning him the title of 'Rookie of the Year'. In 2008 he partnered with Triumph to contest the World Supersport Championship, achieving several top 10 results, while the following year his WSS assault continued with the Hanspree Honda Althea Team -- he ended the season eighth in the championship standings.
In 2010 he tackled four WSS rounds with the Kuja Racing Team, and then in 2011 he signed with Pedercini Team Kawasaki for his Superbike World Championship debut. He finished the year in 19th place, his best result being ninth in race two at round 11, in Italy.
