AGV PistaGP helmet: Rossi debut

The Italian's lids have already carried some fascination, and here's the latest with a number of technical highlights new to the AGV range

Valentino Rossi has a new AGV helmet, which was presented to him at the start of MotoGP testing in Jerez, Spain, on March 23.

This one’s called PistaGP, the name derived as a tribute to Gino Amisano, an entrepreneur who is admired by AGV boss Lino Dainese for “his ability to innovate, the records he achieved, and the competitive spirit with which he faced every challenge”.

The PistaGP is part of AGV’s so-called ‘Standards’ project, which began in 2009 in collaboration with the multiple world champion with the aim of “revolutionizing the way helmets are designed, setting new records for protection and ergonomics that are clearly evident”.

We’ll have to wait and see, but what Dainese is claiming with the PistaGP, the first cab off the ‘Standards’ rank, is:

  • A 36 percent reduction in residual impact force transmitted to the head;
  • The basic visor movement area has been reduced by 71 percent compared to the GP-Tech helmet, allowing the use of saved space to increase the thickness of the absorption material, benefitting safety;
  • The field of vision is 15 degrees wider and the overall visor window area has increased by nine percent compared to the previous helmet, without compromising its level of protection;
  • The air intakes have almost tripled in size, whereas the entire ventilation system of the PistaGP helmet removes heat and moisture very efficiently.

“I am very happy with the PistaGP (as he would be), it feels like I am not wearing a helmet,” said Rossi. “Its aerodynamics have increased, with excellent ventilation and exaggerated visibility, like switching from the TV to the cinema.”

No word as yet when the PistaGP will go on sale in Australia.
