How do you ride a motorbike? A fairly simple question, but one that doesn’t necessarily elicit straightforward answers.
Both my aunty and mother thought they could ride a motorcycle, but ended up bunny hopping into their respective rose gardens – both in full spring bloom at the time. Remember sticking rose thorns on your nose as a child? Great fun.
I digress. Obviously, my relatives hadn’t paid a lot of attention to clutch control or road (garden?) awareness, and I daresay other vital elements of riding a motorbike would not have been adhered to either.
They have both retired from the powered two-wheeler game now, but for learners and experienced riders alike riding a motorbike is a constant work in progress – you never stop learning.
For those new to the craft, it’s the staples of clutch, throttle and brake control and counter steering which take initial precedence, but then you can add in all the other factors which are part of the ‘How to ride a motorbike’ pie such as road awareness, developing ‘feel’, cornering, steering, vision and those intangibles: confidence and overcoming fear.
