A recent report in Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper has confirmed what most people already know – Victoria is the speed camera capital of Australia.
The report found that Victoria currently has 308 speed cameras compared to 178 in New South Wales, 90 in South Australia, 49 in Queensland and 36 in Western Australia.
Whereas Victoria and New South Wales have similar numbers of 200 and 172 fixed speed cameras respectively, Victoria is way ahead when it comes to mobile roadside speed cameras, with 108 to the six mobile cameras that New South Wales possesses.
With the smallest mainland state having the highest number of speed cameras it comes as no surprise to find motorists in Victoria pay the highest amount in speed camera fines per year. Victorian motorists average $113 per year, compared to $63 in South Australia, $60 in New South Wales, $30 in Northern Territory, $25 in Western Australia and just $15 in Queensland.
Questions have been raised over the accuracy of many of Victoria’s speed cameras, with some recent court findings ruling in favour of motorists issued with speed camera infringement notices.
