1. Aussies really love Harley-Davidsons
It's true. Evidence by the fact that in the last six months, more Australians purchased a brand-new Harley-Davidson (4685 units) than Ducati (1054), Triumph (1524), BMW (1719) and Aprilia (382) combined!
2. Yamaha's R3, Kawasaki's Ninja 300 and KTM's RC 390 are sportstourers
Well according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries they are. While BMW's straight-backed S 1000 XR and R 1200 RS are languishing down in the last two spots of the category's 10 highest sellers, the LAMS-approved sportsbikes are first, second and fourth respectively.
3. The magic of the S 1000 XR didn't seem to stick
Despite being a remarkably versatile and tech-laden bit of kit that can lap Australia or scratch up your favourite mountain pass, we remarkably versatile and tech-savvy Aussies didn't fall in love with BMW's S 1000 XR. In the first six months of 2016, BMW dealerships sold just 89 examples. To put it into context, Honda moved 399 examples of its all-new Africa Twin in the five months since its release.
4. Aussie farmers probably feel neglected
In defiance of the fact that Australian farms cover just over 60 per cent of Australia's enormous total land mass and agriculture and its associated sectors account for 12 per cent of this country’s Gross Domestic Product ($155 billion annually), there are only seven two-wheeled motorcycles dedicated to some 350,000 Aussie farmers and their very varied needs.
5. Quiet achievers rule
Rather unremarkably, the motorcycles which have consistently populated the top-10 best-seller list in recent years and which have experienced very little fluctuation in terms of units sold are the tried and trusted bikes that are rarely updated. It's the Kawasaki KLR650s, which sold 191 units in the first six months of 2016 and 196 in the same period last year. Or the CB125E with its 406 (2016) and 437 (2015) units. Or Suzuki's DRZ400E and its 456 (2016) and 429 (2015) units sold. All bikes brands can just 'set and forget' and know they’ll perform.
6. Australia's 10 best-selling roadbikes span just four brands
From the 6666 motorcycles which form the list of Australia's best-selling roadbikes during the first six months of 2016, 2708 of them are split across four Honda-branded models, 1739 of them are three different Harley-Davidson models, 1411 are a result of two different Yamahas while 808 are the work of one Kawasaki (the Ninja 300).
7. Australia Post contractors buy an awful lot of NBC110s
For as long as we can remember the motorcycle which has always topped the charts in Australian motorcycle sales figures has been the low-capacity postal-issue Honda of the time. Now we understand Australia's a big place and there's plenty of ground to cover in order to deliver everyone's mail each and every weekday, but if there was ever a bike that could take whatever this big brown land and its fluro-collared workers could throw at it, it would be the humble yet heroic Honda postie bike.
