300 extra motorbike parking bays for Melbourne

As part of the council's strategy to reduce footpath congestion

As outlined by Bikesales back in June 2019 motorbikes will gain 300 new parking spaces but on-street parking for cars will be restricted as part of the City of Melbourne's transport strategy out to 2030.

The extra bike bays are intended to encourage riders not to park on the footpaths of Melbourne's busiest streets, which should help pedestrian traffic flow.

The strategy aims to cut the 150,000 daily vehicle trips through the city by 30 per cent in the coming years, despite forecasting the population will rise by more than 50 per cent in that period to 1.4 million.

Dealing with that number of people – and encouraging public transport commuting into the city – has the council planning to expand footpaths, rework traffic lights to prioritise pedestrians and convert the "Little" streets in Melbourne's CBD to pedestrian priority zones with a 30km/h – or lower – speed limit.

Inner-city suburbs such as Carlton and East Melbourne.

Around 50km of bicycle lanes will be built in connect the city precincts and the council is proposing to alter the road rules to let cyclists turn left at a red light if they're turning into a bike lane.
