BMW has unveiled an eye-opening new concept model at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event at Lake Como.
The new BMW Concept RR acts as a “preview of the next generation of BMW RR superbikes”, showing punters what is possible for a road-legal sportsbike.
“Never before has BMW Motorrad provided such an early glimpse into a future generation of the RR models,” said Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad.
The idea behind the Concept RR is simple – take the water-cooled inline four-cylinder engine of Toprak Razgatlioglu’s championship-winning WSBK M 1000 RR and put it in a road-legal motorcycle. That means 230hp (169kW), as well as the full suite of WSBK-level electronics and regulation systems that come with it.
Also new is the lightweight and performance-optimised construction, which includes innovative manufacturing techniques and high-tech carbon and aluminium materials.
Aerodynamics were also a focus, with reduced external attachments, enhanced airflow, an optimized fairing, and integrated winglets.
In short, the Concept RR is a literal WSBK race bike for the road.
Of course, the Concept RR is just a concept for now, and it’s unlikely any production version will see the light of day until at least EICMA in November.
But the S 1000 RR had a major update in 2023, so a production Concept RR might still be a few years away.
Early predictions of a middleweight F 900 RR have been squashed for now, but given that most of its rivals have dabbled in that segment, it’s hard not to see BMW pulling the trigger on such a model soon.
