With the 2022 bikesales Bike of the Year now underway, it is time to kick off the second annual bikesales Learner Bike of the Year, proudly presented by Shannons Insurance.
The burgeoning Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) category gets its own bikesales awards process, giving recognition to the newer riders of Australia.
In past years, we awarded LAMS winners in each of our former Bike of the Year categories but, since 2021, we have crowned an outright Learner Bike of the Year winner.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw many Australians look to motorcycling as a form of commuting, a method of travel, and also as an emotional outlet. Motorcycle sales boomed, and there were more learner riders on the roads than ever before.
Now, with the pandemic largely in the rear-view mirror, there has never been a better time to give two wheels a try and see what all the fun is about.
Of course, choosing your first motorcycle is not an easy task, and it is our hope that the bikesales Learner Bike of the Year awards can give you some info to help you decide.
Unlike the main Bike of the Year award, which only accepts new or updated models, the Learner Bike of the Year is open to any series production models available via dealerships. The only requirements are that any potential contender qualifies under the LAMS rules and is on sale prior to September 1, 2022.
For example, the brilliant Royal Enfield Interceptor first surfaced back in 2018, but still earns a finalist nomination in 2022 because of its solid performance, beautiful simplicity, and excellent style.
Likewise, the globe-conquering Yamaha MT-07 makes another appearance thanks to its eye-catching naked-bike styling and performance.
At the other end of the spectrum, the all-new Triumph Tiger Sport 660 offers learners some touring practicality in an easy-to-ride package.
The finalists for the 2022 bikesales Learner Bike of the Year, proudly presented by Shannons Insurance, are:
Aprilia SR GT 125
Benelli TNT 600i
Honda CBR500R
KTM 390 Adventure
KTM RC 390
Royal Enfield Interceptor 650
Royal Enfield Scram 411
Triumph Tiger Sport 660
Yamaha YZF-R7LA
Yamaha MT-07LA
All machines nominated as finalists for the 2022 Learner Bike of the Year award have been closely assessed by our expert team, with criteria including, but not limited to, performance, manageability, safety technology, value for money, build quality, rideability and ease of maintenance.
The team will now close in on those finalists, with further analysis to determine which of the 10 bikes is worthy of taking home the top prize.
All this excitement will then lead into December, when we announce the winner of the 2022 bikesales Learner Bike of the Year, proudly presented by Shannons Insurance. Stay tuned!
