Registrations are now open for the 2021 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, which celebrates classic motorcycle style to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.
Due to take place on Sunday May 23 in a number of locations worldwide, the DGR encourages riders to show sharp vintage style through their choice of motorcycle and clothing.
Motorcycles that are welcome include café racers, classic bikes, modern classics, choppers, brats, bobbers, scooters, trackers, scramblers and side cars – basically anything with a touch of classic style. Clothing generally includes vintage formal wear, but creativity is welcome.
The 2021 rides will utilise one of three different formats (depending on location) in order to meet varying local social distancing requirements.
Some locations, including those in Australia, will run via the normal format with added COVID-safe provisions. These rides will have a start and end point, with riders completing the event in a group. Other locations will avoid group gatherings with a route-only ride, or solo rides.
The DGR was founded in Sydney by Mark Hawwa in 2012. Hawwa was inspired by the television show Mad Men, in which the main character Don Draper rides a classic bike wearing a suit.
Since the inaugural 2012 ride, the DGR has raised over $27 million USD for men’s health. The collective events have hosted 340,000 riders in 107 different countries.
While group rides didn’t take place in 2020 due to COVID-19, the DGR still encouraged solo rides with 56,000 riders raising $2.7 million USD in 171 countries.
Money raised from the 2021 events will go towards Movember, which funds vital research into prostate cancer, as well as innovative mental health programs.
Those who raise over $250USD will receive a commemorative patch and the chance to win a swag of prizes including a brand-new Triumph.
