2020 Yamaha YZ off-road range
Line-up stretches to four machines with 125 and 250cc two-strokes and 250/450cc foursA new 125cc two-stroke and a redesigned 250cc four-stroke are the headline acts of Yamaha’s 2020 YZ enduro machines.
Yamaha says the YZ125X – like its entire off-road range – is optimised for racing in the bush.
Consequently, all Australian models will come fitted with an off-road compliance kit with lights to allow recreational registration in relevant states.
The lightweight two-stroke machine uses reed-valve engine induction and a six-speed transmission for smooth and controllable power across the rev range.
Suspension is fully adjustable KYB units, while Dunlop Geomax AT81 rubber has been chosen to provide grip.
The company spiel says the YZ125X is designed to appeal to junior and entry-level enduro racers and other riders who appreciate the benefits of a lightweight two-stroke on full noise.
Step up to the YZ250X and the performance jumps dramatically. There’s a five-speed transmission – you’ll only need five cogs on this bike – and the motocross-derived design helps it handle off-road trails.

Four-stroke fans can take heart with an updated version of the YZ250FX with a handlebar-mounted switch to adjust preselected engine maps on the fly, along with a smartphone-based tuning app to adjust power setting on your machine to suit the track conditions.
There’s a six-cog transmission, a new lithium-ion battery for the electric start system and updated bodywork.
The top dog in the line-up is the YZ450FX. The 2020 version comes with the same switch and smartphone tuning app to help tweak the rearward-slanted 449cc four-stroke engine.
Pricing and arrival timing of the new machines are yet to be announced.
