BMW’s 895cc parallel-twin is a modified version of the outgoing 798cc powerplant used in the F 800 platform.
The increased capacity (from 853cc to 895cc) allowed BMW to improve the performance of the engine. This includes a higher power output of 77kW (105hp) at 8500 rpm and a maximum torque of 92Nm.
The F 900's share the same steel bridge chassis, but the XR offers a larger windscreen and more bodywork, as well as a more-upright riding stance.
The F 900 XR also adds an extra 10mm in seat height and an extra 2.5l in fuel. The F 900 R has a 13-litre fuel tank and the F 900 XR has a 15.5-litre fuel tank. But despite the XR’s added features, there is only 8kg difference in weight.
Both bikes also feature a comprehensive electronics package which includes traction control, ABS, several rider modes, a 6.5-inch colour TFT screen and in-depth infotainment system. Optional extras include advance rider modes, electronic suspension and a quickshifter.
The bikesales team attended the international launch of both bikes in January, and it was clear that each bike serves a difference purpose. The F 900 R is made for having fun in the hills, where the F 900 XR separates itself with added touring capabilities. Both machines perform exceptionally well and are built with typical BMW precision.
