Yamaha revamps 2019 YZ250F

Fresh from the ground up, according to the Japanese company. And the YZ85 is also new

We’re now in peak new-motocross-model-announcement season, and Yamaha’s fired a major salvo with the launch of a completely revamped YZ250F.

Set to go on sale in August 2018 for $11,399, the YZ250F’s single-cylinder multiple mapped engine has a higher-compression piston and new intake and exhaust valves to deliver more top-end power. The engine also has lighter gears and selector drum, as well as a larger clutch.

There’s electric start, and it has a smartphone tuning system to change engine and fuel settings and check diagnostics.

A larger upper frame bracing is claimed to improve rigidity and durability, while wider rear frame spars and all-new engine mounts centralise mass.

Updated KYB suspension settings have been mated to the updated frame and engine layout, and unspring mass has been reduced with lighter wheels.

Other features include:

• A new compact body and seat design;
• Large 270mm front brake;
• Adjustable four-position handlebar mounts;
• Fresh embedded graphics, blue rocker cover; and
• Simplified servicing with tool-less access to the air filter

It will be available in two colours: Team Yamaha Blue and White or Competition White.

2018 Yamaha YZ85
The mini bike fraternity hasn’t been left out, with the recently announced YZ65 now joined by an all-new YZ85/LW.

The two-stroke is now fitted with Yamaha’s YPVS power valve system to improve performance, while many of the new YZ85 parts are interchangeable with the smaller YZ65, making the step up even less hassle.

The 2019 YZ85 engine has a revised intake, exhaust and transmission, as well as new front forks, new swingarm, new wave-style brake rotors, bigger radiator, adjustable ergonomics and more:

• Fully adjustable shock with progressive linkage-type design;
• Redesigned swingarm features a new composite chain guide as well as updated chain adjusters for easier maintenance;
• Removable lightweight subframe;
• New front brake line and wave disc; and
• New four-position adjustable handlebar mounts and taper-style handlebars.

The new YZ85 comes in two variants. The standard model with 17-inch front and 14-inch rear wheels is priced at $6799, and the LW model with the 19/16-inch combination is $7399.
