2019 EICMA: KTM 1290 Super Duke R

Euro5 compliance, componentry upgrades and reduced weight

As if KTM’s Super Duke R needed anything to improve its potency, the Austrian firm whipped the covers off an updated version for the 2020 model year which sees slightly more power, less weight, a better braking package and improved electronics.

All in the name of Euro 5 compliance, the changes to the engine have resulted in an extra 3hp, up to its 177hp peak, while maximum torque has been decreased by 1Nm down to 140Nm – as well chiming in 1000rpm later than the current version at 8000rpm.

KTM has negated this slight decrease in mid-range usability by shaving 6kg off the overall weight of its flagship superbike, with dry weight down to 189kg.

While the restyled exhaust which houses two catalytic converters is the new focal point, cornering ABS and traction control are the headline items in terms of new electronics. The suspension duties will be taken care of by WP’s APEX items at both ends, while the already excellent front brakes have been uprated to Brembo’s radial-mounted Stylema four-piston calipers.

Australian pricing has yet to be finalised, but the 2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R is expected to land on Aussie shores in the first quarter of next year.
