2017 Bikesales Bike of the Year: Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR

The premium naked bike has come up trumps against a crack field

Aprilia’s Tuono V4 1100 RR has been crowned bikesales.com.au’s Bike of the Year for 2017.

The Bike of the Year award recognises excellence outright across 11 separate motorcycling categories, with the Tuono V4 1100 RR judged to be the best naked bike as well as taking out the overall honour.

"The Tuono V4 1100 RR is a deserved winner of the second ever bikesales.com.au Bike of the Year award," said bikesales.com.au editor Mark Fattore.

"It’s a mouth-watering motorcycle, with corresponding levels of brutal performance and tactility that just makes it so appealing across so many levels.

“What the RR delivers is pure adrenalin, delivering wedge after wedge of glorious, addictive power.

“It also has an 'X factor' that most other bikes could only dream of, and can be enjoyed as a commuter all the way to ripping up race tracks.”

The updated 2017 model Tuono V4 1100 RR received the latest-generation electronics package from the Piaggio Group-owned Italian manufacturer, which included a lighter ride-by-wire system. The Inertial Measurement Unit was also repositioned to ensure a more accurate reading -- and therefore actuation -- of the bike’s sophisticated suite of electronics.

Moreover, the quickshifter became bi-directional, the cornering ABS can now be deactivated, while both a speed limiter and cruise control were also added.

“It’s amazing that our new Aprilia sports models continue to receive accolades like the bikesales.com.au “bike of the year” award,” said Dale McBride, the Marketing Manager for Aprilia Australia.

“We knew when we took our distributorship of the Aprilia brand that we had great bikes, of great quality, heritage and racing DNA. The Tuono RR is no exception with the combination of advanced engineering and technology and above all its just an absolute pleasure to ride.

“This is what resonates with the media and public alike and makes it so desirable.”

Other category winners included BMW’s R 1200 GS Rallye X in the ‘Adventure’ category, and the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT in the 'Sportstouring’ category. Those two bikes were also shortlisted in the final Bike of the Year deliberations alongside the Tuono V4 1100 RR.

The bikes in all 11 categories must have been on sale by September 1, 2017, and met specific criteria to be included in the judging.

From there, the experts at bikesales.com.au determined the 11 category winners based on factors including excellence, innovation, performance and value for money.

The Tuono V4 1100 RR then received the ultimate prize, its virtues particularly based on  brilliant packaging and hitting its target market.
